4 simple ways to boost your immune system this summer

There was (and is) a lot of controversy regarding how to protect ourselves from COVID-19.  This confusion has raged from the time it was first reported to the general public, up until now with the controversy around the effectiveness of the various vaccines.

While controversy and arguments may rage back and forth in the broader public forum, ultimately it is up to us to determine what is best for our health.  Over the years I have seen fads come and go around every tangent of health; diet, exercise, medications, environmental hazards, etc.

One thing we can always do is double-down on what we know works.  We all agree that the stronger our immune system, the better we are able to resist challenges to it.  As we transition to the “new normal” (whatever that may look like) remember there is much you can do to boost your immune system that requires no prescription, no studies, no FDA, no doctor —  just your will, lifestyle decisions and a small investment of time.

Here are 4 Simple Ways to Boost your Immune System Naturally this Summer:

1) Rest.  I am an advocate and apostle for the lost art of resting.  Engage in activities that relax you, take a body-brain vacation from your busy lifestyle, and get deep nurturing sleep are key ways to naturally and simply boost your immune system.  Rest reduces stress and allows the bodies intrinsic healing processes to activate and flow. Less work, less pain, big gains.

2) Deep Breathe Diaphragmatically.  Deep, diaphragmatic breathing controls the autonomic nervous system, which is in essence a “control center” for regulating cortisol (adrenaline) and subsequently, our stress levels.  Engaging in any activity that stimulates deep, diaphragmatic breathing (meditation, breathing exercises, yoga, martial arts, Qigong, etc.) is a quick dose that boosts your immune system — naturally.

3) Regulate Your Stress.  When we think of stress reduction we automatically think of “techniques” that reduce stress.  While these are helpful, it makes sense to also address ROOT CAUSES of stress.  Ask yourself, “Why am I so stressed?”  (Maybe you are overworking? Then rectify that.)  Maybe you are in an unhealthy relationship? (Then set appropriate boundaries or exit the relationship?)  Is your plate far too full of responsibilities? (Then cut some out.) I get deep into tools on how manage your responsibilities and time in my online courses in the “Qigong for Peak Business Performance” courses.  We need to discern the root causes of stress seriously and take action in order to boost our immune system.

4) Do Qigong. This is no doubt the easiest thing on the list to integrate into your life.  Doing Qigong will help you carry out the three other tips listed above, and much more.  In my book the longest any Qigong exercise set runs is 7 minutes.  I even teach a workshop called “4 Minute Fitness” which is a modified Qigong/Yoga routine.  “No Time” is not an excuse.  Make a decision to pick some of this lowest hanging fruit in order to easily boost your immune system.  Your mind and body will thank you.
